Investigation guide
editTriage and analysis
Investigating OpenAI ChatGPT Enterprise Workspace Log Files Accessed
A workspace compliance log archive was listed or downloaded by an account user. These exports can include authentication, conversation, and Codex activity that is useful for both legitimate compliance work and attacker reconnaissance.
Escalate when the actor is unexpected or exports coincide with other privileged changes. Close as a false positive for documented SIEM or compliance collection jobs performed by approved admins.
Possible investigation steps
-
Identify the actor (
user.id,user.email) and source IP. -
Note which log types were requested in
openai_chatgpt_enterprise.audit_log.action_data(for example AUTH_LOG, CONVERSATION_MESSAGE, or CODEX_LOG). - Correlate with other privileged audit activity from the same actor in the surrounding window, such as role changes, invites, or feature toggles.
- Confirm whether the download matches an approved compliance or SIEM collection workflow.
False positive analysis
- Security and compliance teams routinely download workspace logs for investigations, SIEM ingestion, or regulatory requests when using approved admin accounts.
Response and remediation
- Revoke unauthorized sessions and determine whether export data left the organization.
- If the download was unauthorized, inventory other exports by the same actor and tighten who can access workspace logs.
