Investigation guide

Triage and analysis

Investigating OpenAI ChatGPT Enterprise Workspace Log File Deleted

A workspace compliance log archive was deleted. That can remove investigator access to authentication, conversation, or Codex exports and may be used to cover tracks after misuse.

Escalate when the actor is unexpected, deletions follow downloads or privileged changes, or there is no retention-policy ticket. Close as a false positive for documented retention cleanup by approved admins.

Possible investigation steps

  • Identify the actor (user.id, user.email) and source IP.
  • Note openai_chatgpt_enterprise.audit_log.action_data.log_file_id and related event type fields.
  • Correlate with nearby list_workspace_log_files or download_workspace_log_file activity from the same actor.
  • Confirm whether the deletion matches an approved retention or purge job.
  • Review other privileged audit activity by the same actor, such as role changes, invites, or feature toggles.

False positive analysis

  • Retention policies may delete aged workspace log archives on a schedule using approved admin accounts.

Response and remediation

  • Preserve remaining exports, review the actor’s recent privileged activity, and tighten who can delete workspace logs.
  • If the deletion appears unauthorized, inventory other exports or deletions by the same actor and revoke sessions or admin access as appropriate.
